Working together to strengthen food safety The BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment and Egypt’s NFSA sign Declaration of Intent
What it's about:
From 8 April to 9 April 2026, a delegation from the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment), led by the Vice-President, visited the Egyptian National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) in the capital, Cairo.
During the two-day visit, the heads of the two institutions signed a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) aimed at working together to strengthen food safety worldwide.
Egypt’s National Food Safety Authority was established in 2017 as an independent body with the aim of strengthening consumer health protection in the country. It regulates the safety of domestically produced food and conducts inspections on food exports and imports.
In autumn 2025, NFSA Chairman Dr Tareq El-Houby visited the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, where he discussed together with BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment Vice-President Dr Tewes Tralau potential future cooperation and the foundations for developing a joint declaration of intent.
This was signed on 8 April. The declaration focuses on strengthening existing relations and cooperation in the field of food safety. Knowledge exchange and capacity building are particular priorities. For example, a network of risk assessors is to be established, which will enhance the quality of risk assessment through the exchange of knowledge. This will further strengthen consumer health protection in general.
The cooperation is also to include the organisation of joint workshops and training programmes.
During the visit, the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment Vice-President and the Head of the International Affairs Unit, Dr Nicole Gollnick, also met with the Egyptian Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, as well as with the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.
