Project description:

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the competent authority of the Federal Republic of Germany, which is responsible for preparing expert reports and opinions on food and feed safety as well as on the safety of substances and products. As part of its tasks BfR´s Department on Pesticides Safety delivers human health risk assessments on pesticides within the regulatory frameworks of Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009 and Regulation (EC) 396/2005. BfR has access to the studies on pesticide active substances and their metabolites in plants and livestock and other pertinent information. BfR employees participate in EC expert working groups, OECD working groups, panels and expert groups of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and in the Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) hosted by FAO and WHO. In its assessments and recommendations, the BfR is not influenced by any economic, political or social interests.

The pesticide active substance assessments performed at BfR are routinely supported by MetaPath background analyses to identify sources of cumulative exposure, to complete metabolic pathways, where appropriate, and to explore options for read-across in toxicological assessments of pesticide metabolites.

In an internal research project within BfRs Pesticides Safety Department in 2017-18, pesticide active substances were identified that have the potential to form aniline and its derivatives. The aim of this project was to quantify the cumulative consumer exposure towards aniline and aniline-derivative metabolites and to assess the results with respect to possible human health risks. For the identified pesticides all relevant metabolism studies (rat, livestock, plant) and studies on the nature of residues during processing were assessed, and data on a subset of relevant pesticides were entered in MSS Composers (plant, livestock) for inclusion into the MetaPath database. Expertise was previously gained in a pilot project using MetaPath in a structured approach for toxicological assessments.

Within this project the database for MetaPath shall be extended.
