Project description:

The project will contribute to updating and extending the existing EU database of processing factors for pesticide residues. At the onset of this project, the database contained all processing studies that were evaluated by EFSA until December 2021 and all additional processing studies available in the BfR at that time.

Main objectives of the project:

  • The EU database of processing factors is updated with studies that were evaluated by EFSA between 1st January 2022 and 31st August 2023.
  • Studies available to EU Member States submitted in the framework of national/zonal applications for authorisations of plant protection products are collected and integrated into the database.
  • The processing studies evaluated by JMPR are collected and integrated into the database.
  • Information from internal quality controls of food business operators producing processed food is collected and integrated into the database.

All processing studies received are evaluated in accordance with the compendium of representative processing techniques and the criteria used for the development of the first version of the database, such as the representativeness of processing conditions, the suitability and validity of analytical methods, the stability of samples during storage prior to analysis and GLP certification.

Further tasks in the project:

New processed commodities that were not previously considered in the database are included in the compendium of representative processing techniques and the mapping of processed commodities to the FoodEx2 classification system. Within the compendium an annex of the mapping between the raw agricultural commodities (RAC) and the most relevant processed products derived thereof is created.

Studies which have been carried out with a RAC having received pre-harvest or post-harvest application(s), respectively, will be differentiated in the database and separate median processing factors derived for both situations.
