Family: Phytolaccaceae (pokeweed family)

Description

The plant grows up to 2 m tall. Its flowers are greenish to white and grow in dense clusters, from which dark red to black berry-like aggregate fruits develop. The dull-green leaves are elliptical in shape. The flowering period is from July to August. The whole plant, but mainly the roots and seeds, contains irritant triterpene saponins.

Symptoms of poisoning

• Symptoms of poisoning often include prolonged vomiting, diarrhoea and dizziness.
• If a very large amount is ingested, clouding of consciousness and epileptic seizures may occur.
• Contact with the plant sap in the eyes or on the skin can cause severe irritation, including redness and a burning sensation.

First Aid

• If possible, carefully remove any plant matter from the mouth.
• If swallowed, give the person a cup of water or tea to drink.
• If the skin comes into contact with the plant sap, wash it thoroughly with soap and water.
• If the eyes come into contact with the sap, rinse them with water for at least 5 minutes.
• If symptoms occur or if large quantities of plant material have been ingested (e.g. more than 2 berries), contact a Poison Centre immediately.
