Cypress Spurge

Beschreibung

A perennial herbaceous plant (shrub) growing up to 30 centimetres tall, with white latex, found along roadsides, in scrubland and on wasteland. The sparsely branched stems are densely covered with thread-like leaves. During the flowering season from April onwards, the cypress spurge bears umbel-like flowers (arranged in a corymb), which are surrounded by yellow, later red bracts. 

The milky sap in all parts of the pant contains diterpene esters. 

Symptoms of poisoning

• Nausea and vomiting occur following ingestion.
• Skin contact causes redness and a burning sensation.
• Eye contact also causes redness and a burning sensation. It also causes increased tearing.

First Aid

• Remove any plant matter from the mouth if possible.
• If swallowed, have the person drink a cup of water or tea.
• In case of eye contact, rinse thoroughly with water (for approx. 5 minutes; 10 minutes if there is severe stinging).
• In case of skin contact, rinse thoroughly with water or mild soapy water (for approx. 5 minutes)
• If symptoms occur, contact a Poison Centre immediately; and if symptoms persist, have the child examined by a doctor or paediatrician or,in case of eye issues, an ophthalmologist.
