Description and Objective

In times of accelerated food and feed trade and complex, globalised supply chains there is a strong need for efficient tracing strategies including effective communication, data assessment and data exchange strategies as well as powerful tracing tools that are able to interoperate, harmonised data structures and digital data collection. The previous EFSAshort forEuropean Food Safety Authority-BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment “DataColl” project developed an interoperable multiactor food tracing software ecosystem for Europe and a Universal Traceability data eXchange format (UTX) to facilitate interoperability between already existing local, national and European tracing tools and thereby used the synergies between several national and international projects. The purpose of this follow-up project is to transfer the software tools, the multi-actor tracing tool ecosystem and the UTX format into practice and motivate competent authorities to actively apply those in their tasks. For this MS and European authorities will be introduced in the tracing approaches during workshops and coached in applying the tracing tool ecosystem and the UTX format in the framework of tracing scenarios, crisis trainings, case studies and real life foodborne incident investigations. It is also intended to initiate a continuous exchange of tracing experience between local, MS and European authorities as well as other stakeholders (e.g. U.S. FDAshort forFood and Drug Administration, food business operators, networks). All in all, it is expected that the interoperable multi-actor tracing tool ecosystem and the UTX format will improve the quality, timeliness and completeness of tracing data used for immediate analysis at EFSAshort forEuropean Food Safety Authority as well as at the MS and therefore heips to solve complex foodborne crises more efficiently.
