Description and Objective

Trust in research is crucial for scientific and social progress. The poor quality of published data and a lack of transparency have challenged this trust in recent years. Compliance with quality standards is not only part of good scientific practice, it is also an ethical duty when research is based on animal experiments or affects patient lives. The Open Science movement offers many opportunities to improve the quality, the validity, and the transparency of research. In order to be fully effective, Open Science practices must find their way into everyday scientific life. With the Summer School we would like to inform scientists at the beginning of their careers from different areas of the life sciences about the potential of open research for their own science. In this way we would like to contribute to the initiation of a new research culture.

Result

The Summer School was held in Berlin from  September 5-9 in 2022 in Berlin. The BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment worked closely with the QUEST Center for Responsible Research of the BIH Charité to organize the event. 60 students from 12 different countries took part. These were partially supported with travel grants. Many high-ranking international scientists have given lectures and workshops on transparent and reproducible research. In addition to the technical events, several evening events also took place to promote networking. The participants had a wide variety of scientific backgrounds. A special focus this year was also on teaching the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine) in research with animals.
