Description and Objective

The main objective of the EU-funded FNS-Cloud project is to overcome the fragmentation of available food and nutrition data by bringing together data on nutrition, health and consumer behaviour as well as sustainable agriculture and bioeconomy. The cloud solution introduced will increase the utilisation of knowledge on food and nutrition security and help reduce knowledge gaps that are a barrier to public health and agricultural policy. It will also help the food industry to reduce development and production costs and increase sustainable production. Ultimately, the cloud solution will enable consumers to make informed and healthy food choices. The BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment's research work included the development of an online app ("FoodMagnifier"), which makes data from Total Diet studies available in an easily accessible and understandable form. Furthermore, the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment was involved in the further development of the probabilistic exposureExposureTo glossary software MCRA in order to integrate the TDS sampling structure into the software (e.g. regional and seasonal differences).

Result

FoodMagnifier:The FoodMagnifier online app makes it possible to describe and visualise complex data on the occurrence of substances in food and thus make it easily accessible to laypeople.
The app is available in English and German, FoodMagnifier offers an intuitive interface to search by substances (to find their corresponding contents in various foods) and by food (to find what substances they may contain). It allows for convenient comparisons between food items. Background information includes comprehensive substance descriptions, population-based exposure assessments, health-based reference values, and insights into the contribution of different food groups to dietary exposure.Data reflect average substance levels in foods as they are consumed. It is essential to note that FoodMagnifier does not provide generalized statements regarding the nutritional or health value of foods. It is not intended to assess personalised intake or exposure to substances, nor does it offer recommendations on consumption frequencies of specific foods. This Demonstrator was developed based on reliable TDS data on aluminum, cadmium, copper, lead, manganese and mercury from the German pilot TDS conducted in the “TDS-Exposure” project (www.tds-exposure.eu). FoodMagnifier is intended to be used in the future as a tool for other TDS data owners to make their data accessible.FoodMagnifier is available at https://foodmagnifier.eu/ (see also https://fnscloud.eu/catalogues/tools/68).
MCRA (Monte Carlo Risk Assessment):MCRA aims to facilitate the standardization of TDS data, promoting international risk assessment and fostering a user group philosophy to encourage data reuse.
The developed Demonstrator was implemneted based on Total Diet Study data from the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, with the following study goals: Probabilistic risk assessment for exposure of German children to methylmercury (BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment/WUR) Probabilistic cumulative exposure assessment for Dutch children to pesticides (RIVM/WUR) Probabilistic risk assessment for exposure of Belgian children to nickel (Ughent/WUR) MCRA is available after registration at mcra.rivm.nl (see also https://www.fns-cloud.eu/demonstrators/total-diet-studies/)
