Description and Objective

The aim of the project is to evaluate effects that lead to obesity in connection with the substance bisphenol A and analogous compounds. There are several different scientific publications describing such effects.Bisphenol A can pass from food contact materials to food. Furthermore, the aim is to have the EU-FORA Fellow work on the risk assessment of food contact materials at the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment and to provide him with extensive knowledge in this area. The fellow will be closely involved in the scientific assessment of dossiers for substances that migrate from food contact materials into food. These dossiers follow the EFSAshort forEuropean Food Safety Authority guidelines and are submitted for materials and substances for which there are no harmonized EU regulations. Therefore, the scientific assessment is comparable to the safety assessment of a substance to be used in plastic materials in contact with food, carried out by EFSAshort forEuropean Food Safety Authority. Therefore, the fellow will gain a deep insight into risk assessment according to the EFSAshort forEuropean Food Safety Authority guidelines. The fellow begins the project at the University of Granada and continues the program at the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment.

Result

The data on the content of bisphenol A in various foods generated in another project were combined with the consumption levels also collected there, and an exposureExposureTo glossary estimate was carried out for a Spanish cohort of children, adolescents and young adults. The exposure data obtained were probabilistically combined with the tolerable daily intake value derived by the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in order to carry out a risk assessment. In addition, the calculated external exposure values were compared at the individual level with the urine data back-calculated to an external exposure in order to be able to visualise possible correlations.
