Water pipes are also known as oriental tobacco pipes and - depending on the country of origin - as shisha, boory, narghile, arghile, hookha, goza or hubble-bubble.

In studies on health risks, the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment found that the nicotine concentration in the blood increases when smoking water pipes in a similar way to smoking cigarettes. Water pipe smoke also contains the same harmful and addictive substances (nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) as cigarette smoke.
