Linked data for consumer protection Symposium on Linked Data and Artificial Intelligence at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment

We live in a world in which huge amounts of data are constantly being generated. How can this data be utilised and brought together effectively? The symposium “Linked Data in the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence - New Perspectives or Outdated Vision?” from 12 to 13 December 2024 at the Berlin-Marienfelde site of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) is dedicated to this question. The focus will be on new developments in the networking of data and their application in areas such as consumer protection, agriculture, nutrition, the environment and health.

The basic idea behind “Linked Data” comes from Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the World Wide Web. While the World Wide Web is aimed at the exchange of documents, “Linked Data” goes one step further. Here, not only documents but also machine-readable data of all kinds are linked together via a network of computers. One of the main aims is to use this information to gain new insights, for example in science.
The Linked data paradigm is facing “competition” from recent achievements in the domain of generative artificial intelligence (AI). Can generative AI make linked data superfluous, or can the two methods even complement and enhance each other? This will be one of the topics of the panel discussion. Other focal points are “lighthouse projects” of linked data in agriculture, nutrition, health and other areas such as pharmaceuticals, the environment and logistics. There will also be an exchange on practical linked data generation approaches and the trialling of software tools.

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) is a scientifically independent institution within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMELshort forGerman Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture) in Germany. The BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment advises the Federal Government and the States (‘Laender’) on questions of food, chemicals and product safety.
