Environmental Management at the BfR

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment also assumes responsibility with regard to environmental protection and sustainability and was the first federal authority in the division of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) to introduce an environmental management system according to the EMAS standard.

EMAS stands for Eco-Management and Audit Scheme and can be thought of as an environmental and eco-audit. It is based on DIN EN ISO 14001:2015 "Environmental management systems", which was supplemented by EU Eco-Audit Regulation (EC) No. 1221/2009. The BfR site in Berlin Jungfernheide has been successfully EMAS validated since December 2020.

Quality Environmental Management Manual (QEMM)
The same guidelines and paths apply to the control of the environmental management processes as those of the quality management system according to DIN EN ISO 9001, which has been installed and validated at the BfR since 2010. This led to the merger of the two systems. The result of these combined systems is a quality environmental management system (QEMS), which is documented by a quality environmental management manual (QEMM) and other procedural instructions (PIs).

BfR Environmental Policy
The environmental policy, also known as the environmental statement, is a strategic commitment by the BfR to environmental protection and sustainability, in which it undertakes, among other things

  1. to protect the environment,
  2. to fulfil the binding obligations of the organisation and
  3. to continuously improve the environmental management system and its environmental performance.

BfR Environmental Statement
In the annual environmental statement, the BfR presents to the public

  1. a summary of its activities, products and services,
  2. its environmental policy (also called environmental statement),
  3. its significant environmental aspects,
  4. its environmental objectives, individual objectives and measures,
  5. data on its environmental performance,
  6. as well as a reference to the most important legal environmental regulations and their compliance.

This is then documented by confirmation from the environmental verifier.
