The journal External Link:‘UMID: Environment and People - Information Service’ (formerly Environmental Medicine Information Service) provides information to authorities and institutions working in the field of environment as well as health and public health services, professionals working in the field of environmental medicine, and interested citizens. The journal is published twice a year and covers current topics in the fields of environment & health, environmental medicine and consumer protection. It publishes new research results, reports on environmental risk factors and health disorders, recommendations, reviews and event reports.
UMID is jointly published by the authorities involved in the Action Programme Environment and Health (APUG) – the External Link:Federal Office for Radiation Protection, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, the External Link:Robert Koch Institute and the External Link:Federal Environment Agency.
The monthly magazine External Link:Bundesgesundheitsblatt – Gesundheitsforschung – Gesundheitsschutz (Federal Health Gazette – Health Research – Health Protection) covers all issues and areas relevant to public health and government health policy. Its aim is to keep readers up to date on key developments in basic biological and medical research and to provide information on specific health protection measures, prevention concepts, risk management and health promotion. Important topics include the epidemiology of communicable diseases, environmental health protection, and health economics, medical ethics and legal issues. A section at the end of each issue – Announcements/Official Notices – contains official statements from the publishing institutions.
The BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment is represented as an external member on the External Link:Editorial Advisory Board.
The abbreviation APUG stands for "External Link:Aktionsprogramm Umwelt und Gesundheit" (in English: Action Programme for the Environment and Health), which was presented to the public in 1999 by the External Link:Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUV) and the External Link:Federal Ministry of Health (BMG). The External Link:Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) has been involved since 2002. The programme involves cooperation between several ministries and authorities to jointly address issues at the interface between the environment and health. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment is also involved.
