Description and Objective

The funds requested here will be used to synthesize pigments used in tattoos and to study their toxicological properties.

Result

Pigments of different purity & physicochemical properties were used for different toxicological tests. The LuSens keratinocyte activation assay showed that cell activation occurred only with unpurified azo pigments, e.g. Pigment Red 22. The activation correlates with the potential of the pigments to cause allergies. Phototoxicity measurements with the red azo pigment Red 22 showed no difference between purified and non-purified pigments. Both were negative.
