"3R and animal welfare for farm animals: where is the difference"

Description and Objective

Aim of the proposed project: Introduction of a cross-institutional, certified training event, which will be held alternately in Berlin and Zurich. The project applied for here offers the platform for 2 kick-off events, which will then be followed by an annual rhythm of implementation. The first two workshops will be held in hybrid form, i.e. either in person or with digital participation. The first event will take place on 27-28-09. 2022 in Zurich. The topic will be animal handling with a focus on animal training.

Result

This project led to a lifely discussion on similarities and differences in research on welfare of farm animals, either as food producing animal or as animal model in resarch.In September 2022 a workshop was held at the Agrofarm Strickhof, Lindau, Switzerland. It was held as a hybrid conference with more than 100 participants. Overall topic was husbandry training of farm animals. BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment employees held  talks and organized a workshop. The splendid feedback led to an update with a seminar entitled "Handling as refinemnent for farm animals" on 26.09. 2023 at Strickhof, Agrovet, Lindau, Swittzerland. Responsibility for  the practical parts held the PL.
A follow-up meeting is planned in Berlin in 2024, at BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment.
