Health assessment of electronic cigarettes

What is in the liquids of e-cigarettes? What can flavouring substances such as cinnamaldehyde and menthol do to the human body? What health risks are associated with vaping? These are just some of the questions that the scientists at the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment are investigating.
The term ‘e-cigarette’ refers to an electronic cigarette that contains a liquid, usually containing nicotine, instead of tobacco. When smoked, it is heated and vaporised by a battery-powered heating element. The composition of the liquid, which is contained in a cartridge or depot, depends on the product and therefore varies greatly. The nicotine, atomising agents, active ingredients and additives as well as possible impurities can pose health risks for vapers. Furthermore, other harmful substances can be produced due to the effect of heat. The vapour from e-cigarettes can contain substances that are harmful to health, which can also be inhaled by passive vapers. Little is currently known about the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes.
