Health assessment of genetically modified feed
Since 18 April 2004, the following legislation has applied in the European Union (EU) for the marketing of food and feed that consists of, contains or is produced from genetically modified organisms (GMOs):
- Regulation (EC) No. 1829/2003 on genetically modified food and feed
- Regulation (EC) No. 1830/2003 concerning the traceability and labelling of genetically modified organisms and the traceability of food and feed products produced from genetically modified organisms and amending Directive 2001/18/EC
- Regulation (EC) No 65/2004 establishing a system for the development and assignment of unique identifiers for genetically modified organisms
- Regulation (EC) No 641/2004 on detailed rules for the implementation of Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003
The provisions of the Novel Foods Regulation relating to GMO foods have been deleted.
The procedures for authorisation and safety assessment have been amended, along with the provisions for labelling and traceability.
In Germany, it is still possible to label products with the statement ‘ohne Gentechnik’ (without genetic engineering).
