Consumption recommendation for cod liver
Studies show that tinned cod liver in oil is often highly contaminated with dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). In the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment opinion, the EU-wide maximum level of 20 picograms per gram of fresh weight for the sum of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in fish liver and its processed products does not ensure consumer health protection with regular consumption of tinned cod liver in oil. Given the current contamination situation of cod liver, exceeding the maximum tolerable intake levels for dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls cannot be ruled out. For reasons of preventive health protection, the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment recommends eating tinned cod liver in oil in the usual portion size of 150 grams at most every 2 months.
