Rhododendron L.

Family: Ericaceae (heath family)

Description

Rhododendron species are evergreen ornamental shrubs, renowned for their magnificent flowers, and can grow to a height of 0.5 m to 5 m. The leaves are leathery, elliptical to lanceolate in shape, and arranged alternately along the stem. Depending on the species, the flowers appear in white, pink, red, purple, blue or yellow. They are funnel-shaped, bell-shaped or tubular. The flowering period runs from April to June. The fruits are brownish and develop into woody, elongated capsules.

Leaves, nectar and pollen contain diterpenes (grayanotoxins: rhodotoxin)
