Our Tasks

The unit is involved with the legal tasks of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment. Its main work is based on the legal mandate to protect animals used for scientific purposes, dealing in particular with matters related to the breeding, care and housing of experimental animals.

The unit "Animal Husbandry, Aquaculture and Reference Materials" is involved in scientific projects on refinement and supports a variety of projects on food safety assessment. One of its foci is research and assessment of the safety of aquatic food.

Supporting other units

The staff of the specialist group support the work of other specialist departments of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in matters of food safety. In particular, various aspects of the safety of food from aquatic production are researched and evaluated.
For the development and validation of test methods, the division provides the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment scientists with uncontaminated or specifically contaminated reference material.
