The official collection of test methods pursuant to §35 LMBG now online

21/2002, 04.09.2002

Full text of more than 1,000 methods for food control and test institutions available

Together with the Berlin Beuth Verlag, BgVV is now offering a new service: the "Official collection of test methods pursuant to §35 Foods and Other Commodities Act (LMBG)" as an online database. This collection of methods for the sampling and examination of foods, commodities, tobacco products and cosmetics has been published since 1980 and since 1994 by the Federal Institute for Health Protection of Consumers and Veterinary Medicine (BgVV). The current updated loose-leaf collection is published by Beuth Verlag, which now also manages the online database. This database contains the full text of more than 1,000 methods under the heading "Collection of Methods - LMBG".

The Official Collection mainly contains analytical and sampling methods examined in inter-laboratory tests that have been developed or selected in working groups of BgVV or of the German Standards Institute (DIN) with the support of experts from the fields of control, science and industry. Furthermore, it contains "preliminary methods (V)" from the fields of plant protection and residues from veterinary medicinal products which have not yet been examined in inter-laboratory tests but which have already been recognised by food control and other test institutions.

Finally, the Official Collection contains references to a series of methods published elsewhere which also have official standing like for instance analytical methods for residues of plant protection products and pesticides. Full text versions of these methods are not included in the online database but can be accessed on the BgVV homepage and used.

The "Collection of Methods - LMBG" can be accessed on the BgVV homepage (http://www.bgvv.de), menu item "Databases/LMBG data collections" or on the Beuth Verlag homepage (http://www.beuth.de). The new database permits the rapid sourcing of the required study methods using different criteria, for instance field, the study parameters to be determined or the method number. The full texts of the methods are updated every six months, the bibliographical data every month.

It is possible to search for study methods without registering. A fee is only charged for access to the full descriptions of the methods. In this case full registration is necessary. The Beuth Verlag is offering a subscription rate up to the end of the year. More information on prices and registration can be found on the website on http://www.methodensammlung-lmbg.de .

The database will not replace the print version of the collection of methods. It will also be available in future in loose-leaf form.
