Unit Coordination and Overall Assessment
The Unit "Coordination and Overall Assessment" coordinates the professional and operational work at the Department of Chemicals and Product Safety with the aim of maintaining and further developing chemical consumer protection at a high level.
The unit is responsible for the coordination and overall assessment of the department’s opinions and risk assessments, its research activities and the coordination of health assessments according to the Chemicals act.
Within the context of REACH, CLP and GHS, this comprises the management and scientific review of inquiries and opinions regarding human-toxicological issues. The unit coordinates and schedules the respective procedures, conducts the required specialist research, and compiles the corresponding expert reports. Likewise, the unit is also responsible for the coordination and management of intra- and interdepartmental activities.
Concomitantly the unit addresses scientific issues identified during the overall assessment of chemicals and consumer products by initiating, coordinating and conducting research. Current fields of interest include nanotoxicology, potential endocrine disruptors, xenobiotic metabolism on the human skin, and mechanistic and molecular aspects of toxicology. The experimental work is carried out in accredited laboratories and profits from a high level of interdisciplinarity between the department’s toxicological and analytical sciences as well as from the extensive network of national and international research cooperations.
Other key tasks are the involvement in national and international bodies that engage with the risk assessment of substances, preparations and products, as well as the development of alternative assessment strategies and testing methods.
