Food Safety Commission of Japan (FSCJ) and the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) sign cooperation agreement
Germany and Japan intend to intensify their cooperation in the area of risk assessment of food in future. This is laid down in a cooperation agreement signed between the Food Safety Commission of Japan (FSCJ) and the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR). Among other things, the scientific exchange of the two institutions will focus on the development of new analytical procedures for the traceability of flows of goods. "In the increasingly globalised food trade it is indispensable to establish internationally recognised standards in the area of food product identity", said BfR President Professor Dr. Dr. Andreas Hensel on the occasion of the signing of the cooperation agreement in Tokyo. "We want to exchange ideas with Japan on how to expand consumer health protection in the food trade worldwide."
According to the agreement, other areas of scientific cooperation include antimicrobial resistance as well as the food safety of fish and fishery products. The agreement enables the development of a formal collaboration between the FSCJ and the BfR both in the area of scientific risk assessment and research and also in terms of technical and administrative cooperation in these fields.
The FSCJ is a scientific Japanese government organisation which acts independently from risk management state agencies. The FSCJ conducts scientific risk assessment of foods and advises the Japanese government on questions of consumer health protection.
The cooperation agreement with the FSCJ is the latest in a series of such cooperation agreements entered into by the BfR with the aim of strengthening food safety worldwide. Thus the BfR already has bilateral agreements on the scientific exchange of information, for example with the Chinese, Indian and Brazilian sister agencies. The international network is to be further expanded in the future. An overview of all cooperation agreements can be found on the BfR website.
About the BfR
The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is a scientifically independent institution within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in Germany. It advises the Federal Government and Federal Laender on questions of food, chemical and product safety. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks.
