Unit Toxicology of Chemicals

This Unit assesses the toxic effects of chemical substances in accordance with the EU Existing Substances Regulation 793/93 EEC and the Chemicals Act.

This work involves the examination of data which prove or rule out the harmful effect of substances on the basis of experimental tests. Based on these assessments proposals are elaborated for the classification and labelling of the dangerous properties of the substances.

This Unit develops concepts and improvements for the further development of toxicological test methods and assessment guidelines and presents them to international bodies (EU / OECD).

Because of the intensive co-operation with national and international substance assessment bodies, it has close contacts with the National Registration Office for Chemical Substances (BauA / Dortmund) and the European Chemicals Bureau (ECB / Ispra).
