Unit Clearing, EFSA Focal Point and Committees

Unit 21 processes legal and fundamental issues of risk assessment and risk communication in the field of consumer health protection. It is responsible for scientific and legal clearing within the BfR and with other authorities and institutions at national and international level.

The Unit acts as the German EFSA Focal Point, a scientific liaison office between German authorities and institutions and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The German EFSA Focal Point co-ordinates the exchange of scientific information between EFSA and the institutions responsible for food and feed safety in Germany and stakeholders from politics, science, business, industryand consumer associations.

Furthermore, the Unit is responsible for the co-ordination of BfR committees. This scientific expert network advises the Institute on risk assessment of food, feed, chemicals, articles of daily use and other consumer products. The available expertise in Germany is pooled on the highest possible scientific level in the BfR committees. The Unit provides support for the chair persons of the BfR committees and advises the committees on fundamental issues.
