Unit Application Safety
The main task of this Unit is the health assessment of pesticides regarding user protection and protection of uninvolved third parties.
In the area of pesticides this test and assessment work is conducted on the basis of the Plant Protection Act. This includes the estimation of the potential exposure of users and third parties (e.g. workers, people out walking, residents, children at play), risk assessment for these groups of people and the laying down of personal protection measures for the users and, where appropriate, specific requirements for safe handling, classification and labelling in accordance with the Dangerous Substances Ordinance and EU Directive 1999/45/EC.
The Unit is involved in the EU assessment of old and existing substances pursuant to Directive 91/414/EEC.
In the case of biocide products it undertakes preliminary work within the framework of the EU assessment pursuant to Directive 98/8/EC. In the national authorisation procedure pursuant to the Biocides Act the Unit is responsible for the health assessment of consumer biocide products from the angle of protection of the user and uninvolved third parties.
The Unit is also responsible for the health assessment of wood preservatives within the framework of special agreements in conjunction with the RAL quality label awarding or with wood preservatives of the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt) and the German Coatings Association (VdL) and the health assessment of insecticides within the framework of listing pursuant to § 18 Protection against Infection Act.
The Unit participates in the classification and labelling of active pesticide substances on the EU level pursuant to EU Directive 67/548/EEC.
