The BfR intensifies its cooperation with food safety authorities in Portuguese-speaking countries

In Cabo Verde, the BfR presents food safety almanac for the CPLP countries

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) and the food safety agencies of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa, CPLP) are to cooperate more closely in future. This was the agreement reached during a meeting of the BfR, the Portuguese Economics and Food Safety Authority (Autoridade de Segurança Alimentar e Económica, ASAE) and Food Safety Authorities of Cabo Verde taking place between 19 and 22 February 2017 in Praia, the capital city of Cabo Verde. "The worldwide food trade poses new challenges for food safety", says BfR President Professor Dr. Dr. Andreas Hensel. "For the European food safety authorities, jointly developing global strategies and expanding international capacities is therefore an increasingly important task. For this reason, the BfR and the ASAE work closely together with partner authorities in the CPLP countries in the areas of political consulting and scientific education."

Challenges the island nation Cabo Verde is facing in the area of consumer health protection were the main focus of the joint delegation visit of the BfR and ASAE. The Cabo Verde Authority for the Regulation and Supervision of Pharmaceutical Products and Foods (Agência de Regulação e Supervisão dos Produtos Farmacêuticos e Alimentares de Cabo Verde, ARFA) and the General Inspectorate for Economic Activities (Inspecção-Geral das Actividades Económicas, IGAE) provided detailed information about production, international trade and monitoring of foods from Cabo Verde.

Together with the ASAE, the BfR presented a food safety almanac for the CPLP countries. Published by the BfR, the special edition of the “EU Almanac for Food Safety” contains information on the institutions of the nine CPLP countries that are, within the area of consumer health protection, predominantly concerned with risk assessment. The CPLP was founded in 1996 in order to strengthen the cooperation between the Portuguese-speaking countries. Apart from Cabo Verde, they include Angola, Brazil, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Principe, East Timor and Equatorial Guinea.

About the BfR

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is a scientifically independent institution within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in Germany. It advises the Federal Government and Federal Laender on questions of food, chemical and product safety. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks.

The BfR is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the institute has published a jubilee brochure which can be downloaded or ordered free of charge at http://www.bfr.bund.de/de/publikation/broschueren-660.html.
