Visit of the Nepalese Ambassador to the BfR

Nepal and Germany are planning to intensify their scientific exchange in the area of risk assessment in future. This was agreed on the occasion of a visit from the Ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, Mr Ramesh Khanal, to the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) on 10 February 2017. "Ensuring that foods are safe is the basis of international trade", says BfR President Professor Dr. Dr. Andreas Hensel. "In view of global markets, it is important to set international standards for scientific risk assessment."

The ambassador was particularly interested in the guest scientist program and the BfR’s Summer Academy. Apart from training programs for Nepalese scientists, technical support options in the area of laboratory analysis were discussed. Further topics of the conversation were Nepal's agricultural export products such as coffee, tea, apples and noodles. The BfR introduced the "BfR-MEAL-study", the first total diet study in Germany, including an excursion to the kitchen where the actual study is conducted at the BfR.

About the BfR

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is a scientifically independent institution within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in Germany. It advises the Federal Government and Federal Laender on questions of food, chemical and product safety. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks.

This year, the BfR is celebrating its 15th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the BfR has published an anniversary brochure which can be downloaded or ordered free of charge at www.bfr.bund.de.
