Scientific exchange in the area of product and food safety between Germany and China is to be further expanded in future. This was the agreement reached by the China Drug and Food Administration (CFDA) and the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) on the occasion of a visit by the Vice Minister of the CFDA, Jiacai Teng, to the BfR in Berlin. "In view of the global trade of agrarian products, worldwide standards in the area of product and food safety are becoming increasingly important", says BfR President Professor Dr. Dr. Andreas Hensel. "We are proud to be able to share our experiences and knowhow with our Chinese partners in order to further consumer health protection in Germany and China."

One of the focal points of the scientific exchange between the CFDA and the BfR on the occasion of the visit was the development of detection methods for contaminants and other substances. As part of a guided laboratory tour, the BfR provided the CFDA with information on the current research projects on safety in the food chain.

As a result of the global movement of goods, new challenges for food and feed safety have arisen. Together with all its international partners, the BfR is planning to establish suitable procedures and systems that do justice to the general legal and structural frameworks which differ across the globe. The aim is for those procedures and systems to enable the highest possible degree of transparency and traceability of foods.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, Germany in 2015 imported goods of the agricultural and food industry from the People’s Republic of China with a total value of Euro 1.55 billion. This means that agrarian imports from China are roughly on a par with those from Turkey and Switzerland - and growing.

The China Drug and Food Administration (CFDA) is an independent institution in parallel to the National Health and Family Planning Commission, NHFPC. The CFDA is responsible for the registration and certification of medical products and devices, drugs, foods and cosmetic products for the Chinese market.

About the BfR
