Safe foods from the farm to the fork

BfR at the International Green Week in Berlin

"From the Farm to the Fork" - is the motto under which the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) presents itself at the International Green Week in Berlin. Between 21 and 30 January 2011 visitors to the Green Week can get information on the work of BfR in the field of food safety at the theme farm in Hall 3.2 on the Messe Berlin fairgrounds. On the BfR stand three stations symbolise the food chain: a field, a dairy cow and a breakfast table. Along this chain BfR shows how the cow produces safe foods from feeds but also informs about the possible health risks for consumers. Undesired substances may, for instance, be absorbed by the cow with the feedstuffs and reach the plates of consumers through the milk or the meat. "How this can be prevented and how you can ensure safe foods in your own kitchen, will be demonstrated at the stand of BfR", says BfR President Professor Dr. Dr. Andreas Hensel.

Visitors to the exhibition will get information along the food chain at the BfR stand on residues and contaminants in foods and feeds but also about the role of natural ingredients and additives. With the "error fridge" of BfR they can test their knowledge about the proper storage of sensitive foods. At the quiz on food safety small prizes can be won and visitors may even try to milk the model cow.

The BfR presentation is supplemented by events on the stage of the theme farm. BfR staff will isolate DNA from a banana together with visitors to the Green Week of all ages to show how food ingredients can be identified. This experiment takes place on 26 January at 2.15 pm, on 27 January at 2.45 pm and on 30 January at 11.15 am.
