Detergents and cleaning agents

The new Detergent and Cleaning Agent Act came into force on 5 May 2007. It replaces the Detergent and Cleaning Agent Act of 5 March 1987 and supplements the EU Detergents Regulation 648/2004 of 31 March 2004. Besides improved health protection for consumers in their daily handling of detergents and cleaning agents, it also serves environmental protection.

Pursuant to the new Act (§ 10), the manufacturers of detergents and cleaning agents must submit a data sheet with details of their product ingredients to BfR prior to placing their products on the market. BfR passes on the electronic information for the purposes of emergency advice to the poison information and treatment centres of the federal states. The poison information and treatment centres are then in a position to advise the attending physicians who, in turn, are then in a position to give what is sometimes lifesaving assistance.

Furthermore, BfR passes on the name of the manufacturer and the trade name of the detergent or cleaning agent to the Federal Environmental Agency (UBA).

The notification tools for detergents and cleaning agents can be accessed on "Further information".
