Award for BfR cooperation project on new molecular mechanisms in toxicology

The 83rd annual conference of the German Society for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology (DGPT) took place in Heidelberg from 7 to 9 March 2017.

During the conference, Dr. Nicola Groll as the representative of the cooperation partner NMI (Natural and Medical Sciences Institute at the University of Tübingen), presented the results of a research project headed by Dr. Albert Braeuning, Department of Food Safety at the BfR, in the form of a poster which was awarded the DGPT prize for the best poster in the field of Toxicology. Within the scope of the project, which was conducted jointly by the BfR and NMI, new molecular modes of action of the model tumour promoter phenobarbital on the Wnt/β-Catenin signalling pathway, which is important in tumorigenesis, were clarified.

The results of the project have been published in the journals Biological Chemistry (Groll et al., 397(1):91-96, 2016) and Toxicology (Groll et al., 370:94-105, 2016). The awarding of the prize underscores the quality of the research conducted at both institutes, as well as the successful cooperation of the BfR and NMI, which continues in other research projects.
