Food monitoring

What is food monitoring?

Food monitoring is a systematic measurement and monitoring program which has been jointly run since 1995 by the federal government and the Länder. It involves a representative selection of foods for the Federal Republic of Germany being examined for their levels of substances deemed undesirable from the health angle. The basis for the annual monitoring is a plan drawn up the federal government and Länder which lays down in detail the selection of foods and the substances to be monitored.

Goals of food monitoring

Food monitoring serves the purposes of preventive consumer health protection. With its help possible health risks from environmental contaminants, residues of plant protection products and other undesirable substances can be recognized early on and, if appropriate, contained through targeted measures.

Statutory foundations

§ 46d of the Foods and Other Commodities Act lays down the conduct of food monitoring.

Conduct

Food monitoring is conducted as an independent statutory task within the framework of official food control. This means that in addition to their routine examination tasks, the Land control authorities are also responsible for collecting and analyzing food samples for monitoring.

The data obtained are passed on to BgVV which records and evaluates the material. BgVV is also responsible for reporting. The monitoring results are published every year in a reporting series entitled "Food Monitoring". BgVV also makes the reports available to international bodies in the EU and WHO.

Further information

The recently published "Food Monitoring 1998" (in German) is available at a cost of DM 10 from the BgVV Press and Public Relations Office. Along with the report, a volume with tables comprising the data in compressed form is available. The report can also be downloaded as a PDF file.

A press release provides additional information.
