Overview "ZEBET"

ZEBET Advisory Committee

Since 1994 the work of ZEBET has been accompanied by a national Advisory Committee whose members are appointed by the competent ministry. The Advisory Committee is composed of scientists from the chemical-pharmaceutical industry, representatives of animal protection associations and a representative of the Länder authorities responsible for the authorisation and notification of animal experiment projects.

In the remit of the "Advisory Committee for the Evaluation of Alternatives to Animal Experiments to support ZEBET in the Federal Institute for Health Protection of Consumers and Veterinary Medicine" (ZEBET Advisory Committee) of 10 December 1996 its tasks are defined in § 1.

§ 1 Tasks

The Committee provides support for the work of ZEBET in the form of fundamental considerations on the planning and conduct of interlaboratory tests. It also offers advice on the development and use of general application criteria for alternatives to animal experiments. The focus of its work is on the critical assessment of prescribed toxicological animal experiments with the goal of replacing them with methods involving no animal experiments and, where this is not possible, of reducing the number or suffering of the animals. The Advisory Committee's proposals are submitted to the BfR in the form of recommendations
